Tape Storage Makes a Comeback

Armed with updated technology and reduced costs, tape may be showing signs of a comeback this year, according to a February 2012 analysis in Storage Magazine.

Tape storage has proven to be a great format for backup and recovery, archiving offsite data, and disaster recovery. Besides being the cheapest method of storing data for long periods of time, tape reliability has improved 700x in the past 12 years.

Boasting up to 3 TB of compressed capacity, LTO is the dominant tape format in the open systems market. The next generation LTO is expected to be released in 2012 with 8 TB of capacity (compressed).
