You’ve heard that the Brocade DCX 8510 supports 16 Gbps Fibre Channel protocol and that it provides high-performance network infrastructure. But what makes the 8510 different from other Brocade DCX backbones?


Comparing the Brocade DCX and DCX 8510

The Brocade DCX 8510 has several advantages over the traditional Brocade DCX backbone. The DCX 8510 sets the bar high for other switching infrastructure by providing advanced in-flight compression, in-flight encryption, diagnostic ports, and greater total bandwidth.

    1. Advanced Technology: In-flight transcription, in-flight encryption, and forward error correction are all advanced technical features unique to the DCX 8510 series. Both in-flight encryption and in-flight compression are available only on 16 Gbps port blades.

In-flight compression helps optimize network performance both within the data center as well as over long distances. To reduce the risk of unauthorized use of the network, in-flight encryption uses an algorithm to encrypt data at the source and decrypt it at the destination.

In-flight encryption and compression have minimal impact on performance and can be used together using 16 Gbps blades to provide high-performance, secure network connections.

    1. Diagnostic ports: One function that other directors fail to provide are diagnostic ports, also referred to as D_Ports, that work to improve reliability of the SAN fabric. D_Ports are a new type of port that helps SAN administrators to detect and diagnose SAN infrastructure problems.

Diagnostic porst are designed to help administrators save valuable time and resources with quick detection of a variety of fabric infrastructure issues. D_Ports can be used to detect a variety of problems, test for latency, and discover failed ports, cables, and SFPs. Diagnostic ports are currently available on the DCX 8510 Backbone, but are not available with any other Brocade DCX product.

    1. Greater Total Bandwidth: The 8510 provides greater total bandwidth than other backbones. Totaling 8.2 Tbps of chassis bandwidth, the Brocade DCX 8510 provides the most power and unmatched, industry-leading performance capabilities.
