Reliant Technology - Asset Recovery Program - Make Money

When you make the decision to get rid of surplus storage, server, or networking equipment, you may not know exactly what to do with it. Should you put it in a closet in the back of your data center? Let it gather dust? Decommission and recycle it?

The truth is that you have a lot of options when it comes to Asset Recovery. You want to  make sure that you make the best option for your organization. There may be value in your equipment that you may not know about. You don’t want to waste the opportunity to get more ROI on that hardware.

So, how can you get the most money out of your surplus IT hardware? Finding the best Asset Recovery option for your equipment will help you get the most resale value. Then you can put that money into your budget, or towards future upgrades.

What are some of our tips to ensure that you get the best value for your surplus or pre-owned EMC, NetApp, IBM, Hitachi, Brocade, Cisco, and other data center equipment?

1.  Know What Equipment is Hot on the Secondary Market

The reality is that some equipment is more popular on the secondary market. That means that Asset Recovery and Trade-In programs will be more likely to shell out the big bucks for certain types of equipment. But what makes some equipment more desirable on the used market than others?

Supply and demand is the most basic answer. If there’s more of a particular piece of equipment out there on the used market, the market floods. This flooding depletes the value of your hardware will be somewhat diminished. So, when a huge chunk of companies are on the same purchasing cycle, there will be an influx of equipment in the market at the same time. This means that you may not be able to get the most bang for your buck.

Another factor to consider is age of the equipment. In most cases, the older the equipment, the less resale value it has. The closer the equipment is to its release date, the more value you can get for that equipment. So, take EMC for example. You’re more likely to get more money for a VNX2 system and upgrades on the used market than a CLARiiON CX series system. You may still be able to get some value out of the CX series system, but it’s not as likely to get you as much as a more recently released system. With NetApp disk shelves, you’re more likely to get more money for disk shelves such as the DS4486 and DS4246 rather than a DS14MK2 shelf.

2. Speed is A Key Factor for Drive Resale Value

While this isn't a hard and fast rule, more often than not speed is a huge determining factor in the resale value of your disk drives. Since most end-users are looking for faster and faster drives for their storage environment, the best resale value will be for those drives that can help them meet that need for speed. Again, this doesn’t always mean that all slower speed drives have no value. In fact, it could be the opposite! But, to know for sure, check out our Buyback Hot List or submit a pricing request.

3. Logistics Affect Overall ROI

When it comes to resale value, there are other factors that you’ll need to keep in mind for getting the most money. Equipment location, logistics for decommissioning, and other factors will also play a part in resale value. If the procedure to uninstall and receiving the equipment is overly complicated, the likelihood is that the value will deplete because of the cost to get the equipment.

But, some of these logistics for decommissioning your equipment is worth it. You don’t want to sell a tray of drives that still has costumer data on it, do you? That’s not good for your business or your customers. So, make sure that you look into data wiping for your equipment before selling it. This will ensure that no data can be pulled from those drives, thereby protecting your business’s data (and reputation). Want to know more about Data Wiping or DOD-Level Data Wipes?
