Protect Your Enterprise with a Disaster Recovery Strategy

As wildfires blaze across the Western United States, severe thunderstorms knock out power for days, and drought conditions worsen flash flood conditions, the need for a solid disaster recovery strategy becomes readily apparent.

Climate Changes Could Bring Stronger Storms

According to the Disaster Recovery Institute (DRI), 2011 was the worst year on record for disasters. The future forecast isn’t much brighter; research meteorologist Harold Brooks told Computerworld that the quantity and severity of natural disasters increases as the temperature escalates.

Severe weather can have damaging local and regional impact on enterprises that lack a well-established DR plan. DNI suggests a disaster recovery program that disperses IT infrastructure around the region to reduce the risk associated with a regional storm, fire, or hurricane.

But We’re Using the Cloud…

Although the cloud is promoted as a tool that provides highly-available data, intense weather systems and natural disasters can have a serious impact on cloud availability.

Take Amazon Web Services, for instance. Recent severe thunderstorms caused the cloud service provider to go down on two separate occasions in late June. The outages, which lasted for a couple hours each, created several hours of downtime for websites.

Brandon Wade, CEO of WhatsYourPrice.com, was using Amazon Web Services when the outages occurred. After more than 1,000 customers complained about the outages, he decided to deploy a DR setup in two separate brick-and-mortar facilities in addition to his cloud infrastructure.
