When it comes to data storage in general, cost is always one of the chief considerations that must be dealt with before any type of decision is made. As a business continues to grow and evolve, additional hardware will need to be purchased to keep up with demand. Indeed, many people define storage efficiency as a measurement of how successfully you're able to meet capacity demands within your organization, compared to the total amount of money you're spending and the total return on investment that you're capable of seeing.

Longevity Considerations

Another significant factor that goes into data storage efficiency comes from not just meeting your data storage demands, but also the total length of time you're able to keep up with those ever changing requirements. Generally speaking, businesses are not typically able to keep up with the speed of the technology changes introduced by the manufacturer. Instead, the types of storage hardware solutions that businesses are investing in will always be two to four generations behind the latest technologies. When a product is released, it is typically declared EoL (or end of life) by its vendor approximately 17 months later. Because of this, "longevity" is not defined as having the newest storage solution available and is instead related to solutions that are still useful a number of years after support has been discontinued by the original manufacturer.

If storage solutions are able to stay useful for as long as possible, the normal operational costs (like power consumption, financing costs and others) will therefore have a significantly reduced impact on return on investment and therefore on data storage efficiency in general.
