EMC CLARiiON CX4 storage arrays are approaching End of Service Life (EOSL) December 2016. When your EMC hardware reaches EOSL, IT managers must make decisions based on performance and capacity needs.  So, do you keep your CX4-120, CX4-240, CX4-480, CX4-960? Or should you upgrade to the latest and greatest EMC equipment? This is just one of the many questions we receive from EMC users. The answer isn’t always simple, it depends.

We sat down with one of our EMC storage specialists to help answer some of the most pressing questions when it comes to your CLARiiON CX4 storage array.

Q. CLARiiON CX4 hardware is approaching EOSL. What does that mean for my existing array?

EOSL, or End of Service Life indicates the final milestone in EMC’s product lifecycle. This phase usually means the OEM no longer offers support or operating system updates  for that particular hardware.

For CLARiiON CX4, EOSL means EMC won’t be making changes to the functionality of your storage array. This doesn’t have to mean that an upgrade is in your near future. All your storage hardware can be maintained well past the EOSL date through third party support. Third party maintenance has the ability to save you 30-70% on your hardware support budget.

Q. Do I have to upgrade my CX4?

The rules for upgrading your storage array aren’t set in stone. Upgrading to the latest EMC hardware is your decision. Product milestones are set by the OEM  to push the newest equipment, but end users should know that the EOSL date isn’t a mandate to upgrade.

Depending on the workload and applications you may be running, there are a number of options for adding capacity and boosting performance in your CX4 array. The secondary market is ripe with CLARiiON drives and DAEs should you stick with your CX4.

Q. What are my options if I decide to keep my CX4?

At this point, keeping your CX4 array means leaving EMC support behind. You’ll need to find an alternative hardware maintenance provider. You should ensure that your third party support provider offers the following:

Flexible SLAs

Choose a maintenance provider that has the same (or better) level of service compared to the OEM. Whether you want 24x7x365 coverage or Next-Business-Day parts replacement, you’ll want to find a provider that gives you options.

Global Coverage

You’ll need a support vendor who can be available where you need them to be. Have EMC hardware in multiple locations? You’ll want a vendor that can support your equipment wherever it may be.

Expert Engineers

You’ll want to receive support from a vendor with OEM-level certifications. At Reliant, our engineers have multiple certifications to ensure that you get the best quality support.

What Now?

Don’t be pressured to upgrade your CX4 storage array because it is EOSL. You can add drives to meet capacity and performance demands or you can repurpose your CX4 for disaster recovery.
