Reliant Technology - ITAD Myths Debunked

In recent years, headlines about sensitive data breaches or stolen became more frequent. Organizations spend valuable time and money securing client and employee information. But what happens when that type of care is only extended to current data in your storage environment? Companies often put most of their effort into managing new and current assets, while letting IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) fall to the wayside. Decommissioned equipment has just as high, if not higher, risk of breach if not properly handled.

ITAD strategy protects your company from legal liability, loss of confidential data, and loss of clientele due to a data breach. As the need for ITAD strategies grow, companies opt for third-party Asset Recovery vendors. Trusting sensitive data to another company can be nerve wracking. We’re here to clear up a few common misconceptions about ITAD to better prepare you.

Myth #1: I Can Just Press “Reset,” Right?

Wrong! Protecting decommissioned data center equipment is not as easy as pressing delete or reset. Erasing data from a drive doesn’t mean that sensitive information is no longer accessible. In that scenario, a data recovery expert may still find the data. Organizations should look into data wiping to ensure that data is permanently erased. Data wiping can also assist with certain compliance standards should that be an issue. Does your organization have to follow HIPAA or any other compliance guidelines? Make sure the ITAD vendor can certify that the data erasure is Department of Defense (DOD) compliant.

Myth #2: All IT Asset Disposition Vendors are Created Equal

Wrong! More companies are deciding to use third-party IT Asset Disposition vendors. But, the search to find one can still be frustrating. There are many  factors to take into consideration when choosing an ITAD vendor. Do they provide services to where I’m located? What type of certifications do they have? And what about data security? These questions are enough to leave your head spinning. But how they ensure the erasure of the data should be a top priority. Choose an ITAD partner that has the certifications necessary like DOD compliant data erasure. Whether you opt for a 3-pass or 7-pass data wipe is up to you. But understanding the differences between the two can help you make an informed decision.

Myth #3: IT Asset Disposition Doesn’t Generate Revenue

Wrong! Many people think of getting rid of data means destroying the equipment that holds it. This isn’t necessarily true. Why not consider data wiping? Data wiping makes the information on the drive unreadable while keeping the equipment intact. This allows you to think of new possibilities for your aftermarket IT hardware. Sell your used equipment to generate more funds for your IT budget. Or you can opt to trade-in the hardware towards newer storage equipment. Now you can protect your business's sensitive information, as well as put some extra cash into your IT budget.
