IBM and EMC storage software sales reached record revenue levels in 2011. Sales increased 10.5% year over year for the storage software industry.

The storage software market reached a record revenue level of $14.8 billion and surpassed 2010 revenue levels by almost $4 billion.

EMC Storage Software Leads Market

EMC storage software continued to dominate the storage software market and claimed almost 26% of the market in 2011.

IBM and Symantec products trailed EMC storage software in the 2011 market with 19.8% and 15.4% of the market, respectively.

Out of the seven data storage software segments that the IDC tracks, four of the segments experienced double digit growth. The biggest winners were Data Protection and Recovery software, Storage Replication software, Storage Infrastructure software, and Storage and Device Management software.

Future Growth for Data Storage Software

Eric Sheppard, the research director for storage software at IDC, believes that data storage software continues to possess a great potential for growth.

Despite being a mature market, he says, growth will continue due to increasing amounts of virtualization and archiving as well as more stringent recovery time objectives (RTOs).
